Stop-by-Stop Route Itinerary
Stop 1: Tizi n’Tichka Pass (Elevation 2,260m / 7,415 ft)
Departing Marrakech along the N9, the road begins ascending the northern slopes of the High Atlas. Following extensive modern widening projects, the pass is well-paved with guardrails, though sharp switchbacks demand attentive driving. At the summit of Tizi n’Tichka, roadside viewpoints overlook terraced walnut groves and traditional stone Amazigh hamlets clinging to the valley walls. Bring a warm jacket, as temperatures at the summit can be 10°C to 15°C cooler than in Marrakech.
Stop 2: Ksar Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate
Shortly past the pass summit, a scenic secondary road (P1506) branches east toward Telouet and rejoins the highway at Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage-listed earthen fortress. Built along the historic Ounila trans-Saharan caravan corridor, the ksar features defensive towers and high mud-brick walls that have served as the backdrop for films like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Cross the pedestrian bridge over the riverbed to explore the narrow alleys and climb to the ruined agadir (fortified granary) at the hilltop.
Thirty kilometers further east lies Ouarzazate, the regional administrative hub known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” home to Atlas Film Studios and the impressive 17th-century Kasbah Taourirt.
Stop 3: Skoura Oasis & Valley of the Roses (Kelaat M’gouna)
Heading east from Ouarzazate on the N10, the route passes through the expansive date palm oasis of Skoura, home to Kasbah Amridil (featured on the historic 50-dirham banknote). Continuing through Kelaat M’gouna, you enter the Valley of the Roses, famous for its cultivation of fragrant Damask roses (Rosa damascena). If traveling in April or early May, the valley is filled with pink blossoms, and roadside distillers sell authentic rosewater, essential oils, and cosmetics.
Stop 4: Dades Gorge & The Famous Switchbacks
At Boumalne Dades, turn north off the N10 to drive into the Dades Gorge. The road cuts through dramatic limestone cliffs, leading past unusual rock formations known locally as the “Monkey Fingers” (les doigts de singe). Higher up the valley, the highway climbs the famous Tisdrine hairpin switchbacks, offering one of Morocco’s most iconic road trip vistas. The Dades Valley is the best place to break the first night of driving, with dozens of character-filled riverside auberges.
Stop 5: Todra Gorge (Tinghir)
Continuing east the following morning, you reach Tinghir and turn north into Todra Gorge. Here, the High Atlas plateau fractures into a dramatic 300-meter-deep limestone canyon. At its narrowest point, the canyon floor spans just 10 meters wide, with sheer orange rock faces flanking a clear mountain stream. It is a premier international rock climbing destination and a refreshing spot for a morning stroll.
Stop 6: Erfoud & Rissani to Merzouga
Past Tinghir, the landscape flattens into expansive desert plains dotted with ancient khattara (underground irrigation canals). You will pass through Erfoud, renowned for its fossil workshops and annual October Date Festival, and Rissani, the historic seat of trade caravans. From Rissani, the final 35 kilometers of straight paved highway lead directly to the towering sand walls of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.
